To me, growing up as a child just north of Alps, a mighty mountain range separating central Europe from southern Europe, mountains symbolized the obstacles I had to overcome to make my life in Israel. Today, living opposite the Golan Heights, these mountains feel like a protective barrier against hordes of bloodthirsty enemies behind them in the East. The mountains of my youth infused me with determination, the mountains of my adulthood make me feel safe.
